The overall intent of the 2010 Community Plan is to engage the community in opportunities related to the Games, encourage business investment and legacies, and encourage ongoing participation in physical activity, sport, volunteerism and arts & culture.
Key Themes The programs and opportunities identified in 2010 Community were organized into five key themes: 1. Welcoming Spirit - Promoting Surrey’s attributes and showcasing our facilities on a national and international level. 2. Cultural Spirit - Building enthusiasm, engaging and connecting the community with various initiatives and long lasting legacies. 3. Business Spirit - Maximizing opportunities for Surrey businesses to realize economic benefits associated with the Games. 4. Active Spirit - Creating programs to help all ages and abilities become more physically active. 5. Community Spirit - Building enthusiasm, engaging and connecting the community with various initiatives and long lasting legacies. The four key objectives of Surrey’s 2010 Community Plan are: to stimulate economic development and investment during and after the Games; create a variety of legacy benefits; encourage wide participation in all of the City’s 2010 programs and celebrations; and inspire civic pride among all residents. Stimulating Economic Development - Surrey has a comprehensive economic development plan to attract investment to the City during and following the 2010 Games.
- Surrey has a comprehensive public relations strategy designed to capitalize on the unique opportunity to elevate its national and international profile and gain world wide media exposure during the Games.
- As a VANOC partner, Surrey will have a strong presence in the 2010 Commerce Centre and preferential opportunities to showcase the City’s lifestyle features and business development advantages to international visitors, investors and VIPs during the Games.
Creating Legacy Benefits - Surrey’s investment as a Venue City enables the City to expedite the construction of a much-needed 21,000 square-foot multi-purpose community centre in an area of acute need.
- Surrey’s investment as a venue city enables the City to fast-track the construction of a visitor centre at the Peace Arch border crossing solely dedicated to promoting Surrey amenities, attractions and businesses.
- As a Venue City, Surrey will receive 52 modular housing units from the Whistler athlete village following the Games, which will to be deployed in areas of acute social housing need.
- Through education initiatives such as our partnership with Right to Play, the City will optimize a unique opportunity to promote healthier living choices for current and future generations of Surrey residents while generating legacy funding for the Surrey Community Schools Partnership program benefitting inner City schools.
Encouraging Participation - The programs and activities included in the 2010 Community Plan encourage greater degrees of sport participation, active living, and responsible decision making on the part of our youth.
- Our celebration site and torch relay celebrations will enable Surrey residents and families to experience the spirit of the 2010 Games without leaving the City.
- Our 2010 Community Plan and Venue City role will encourage greater levels of volunteerism within the community.
Inspiring Civic Pride - Surrey’s participation as a Venue City for the 2010 Games symbolizes our transformation to a complete and self reliant city, and reinforces our civic motto The Future Lives Here.
- Our participation as a venue city demonstrates that Surrey has become an international centre with the capability to play an important role in a major event such as the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
