Surrey Art Gallery and Surrey Arts Centre celebrate the 2010 Olympic Games with vibrant visual and performing arts events. • Appliquéd butterfly wings, beaded silk, African mud cloth and Salish weaving are a few of the materials and techniques used to make "Quilt of Belonging", a 36-metre masterpiece of textile artistry. Its 263 squares are made by representatives of all Aboriginal Peoples and immigrant nationalities in Canada. The Quilt will be a feature exhibition at the Surrey Art Gallery from January 23 through April 4, 2010, with an official opening on Saturday, January 23 at 2:00 pm that everyone is welcome to attend. Presented with Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad. Admission by donation. More information. • “At Nightfall” is a subtle, gorgeous piece of choreography about Auguste, a shoemaker who discovers a magical water forest. Beautiful imagery and engaging characters create a magical world on stage. This visually breathtaking dance performance by Quebec’s Sursaut Dance Company/Sursaut compagnie de danse enchants audiences of all ages, and will be at Surrey Arts Centre’s Main Stage on March 20 at 2:00 pm. Presented with Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad. More information and/or purchase tickets. • The “Glocal” project is a Cultural Capitals of Canada initiative of the Surrey Art Gallery, to develop digital media artwork using open source software, digital photography, online social networks and screen technologies. It will be exhibited as an outdoor architectonic projection, also known as an "urban screen". The artwork will use the west facade of the new Surrey Games Preparation Centre (located between Gateway and Surrey Central SkyTrain stations) as the presentation canvas and will utilize a database of digital images created by Surrey youth, and others contributed from around the world. It will be presented every evening during the Cultural Olympiad, and will be highlighted as part of the CODE (Cultural Olympiad Digital Edition) exhibition, which features extraordinary examples of digital art by artists from around the world. The infrastructure to create this urban screen will remain as a legacy exhibition venue.
