Live Traffic Cams: plan the best route

Finding a location in Surrey is quite simple because the road system is designed on a grid.  Avenues in Surrey run east/west, starting at 0 Avenue (the Canada/US border) and going to 116th Avenue. Streets run north/south starting at 120th Street (Surrey/Delta boundary) and going to 196th Street (Surrey/Langley boundary).

SURREY'S PLANS FOR TRANSPORTATION DURING THE 2010 WINTER OLYMPICS
The Olympic organizers are strongly discouraging people from driving to Olympic events. There will be extensive restrictions on car travel and parking in Vancouver during the Games so we are planning for additional traffic and parking demands near transit locations in Surrey to allow residents to easily park and ride.

SKYTRAIN
Getting from Surrey to other areas in the region can be done by public transit.  Skytrain is the region's automated, light rapid transit system; it is approximately a 35 minute ride to the waterfront in downtown Vancouver. There are 4 Skytrain stations in Surrey: Scott Road (and King George Highway), Gateway (108th Avenue), Surrey Central (102nd Avenue) and King George (99th Avenue).

PARK & RIDE
We will be discouraging people from driving into Surrey City Centre. However, the existing Park & Rides in the City will continue to operate at the King George and Scott Road SkyTrain Stations, and in South Surrey (at the intersection of King George Highway and Highway 99). We are working with our partners to provide additional parking, especially around Scott Road SkyTrain Station. Please see map for details.

What can you do to help make our Celebration a success?
Although we are making preparations for the extra visitors, we need your help to ensure your participation in the Olympics is a happy and safe experience. Please think twice before deciding to drive to either the Celebration Site or to a SkyTrain Station and make full use of alternative modes of transportation, especially transit (www.translink.ca), but also consider cycling, walking, sharing a taxi or carpooling. Here are some of the things we can all do to ensure we have a good time during the Games.

  • Know before you go. Plan your trips in advance and make sure you know which transit to use and what time it runs. All TransLink and BC Transit buses are accessible. Trip planners are available at TransLink’s website (www.translink.ca) and Google Maps (maps.google.ca).
  • Leave plenty of time. Traffic, parking and transit delays should be expected so give yourself lots of time to get to your destination.
  • Use public transit. The Holland Park Celebration Site in Surrey City Centre is across the street from the King George SkyTrain Station and just a few blocks from Surrey Central SkyTrain Station and Bus Exchange, connecting you to TransLink’s transit network. For transit maps in Surrey follow the links: North Surrey and South Surrey. For other maps and trip planners visit www.translink.ca or maps.google.ca.
  • Walk or bike whenever possible. Using these modes will ensure you get to your destination while contributing to a more sustainable Games.
  • Carpool.  If you do have to drive, try to carpool to a Park & Ride or meet at a friends’ house and take transit together.
  • Take a taxi. Get a group of friends and share a taxi to the Holland Park Celebration Site, a bus exchange or a SkyTrain Station, making a faster trip and not having to worry about parking. See below for a list of taxi companies that operate in the Surrey area.
  • Consider parking further away from the SkyTrain stations and Holland Park Celebration Site and walk a few extra blocks if driving is your only option.
  • Respect all parking controls and restrictions.  They are there for a reason!  We have a responsibility to maintain the safe movement of everyone using the roads ensuring transit, the emergency services, cyclists and pedestrians can continue to use our roads.
